Endangered Species Student International Graphic Design Competition

Call for entries

Tokyo Designers Week, Japan, together with designboom promotes an international graphic design competition.
Participation is open to students from every country in the world, free registration required.

In the time is takes you to read this call for entries, one of our planet’s unique species will become extinct. By this time next year, over 50,000 will have disappeared forever. This graphic competition focuses on recovering and conserving our imperiled species.

WHAT CAN GRAPHIC DESIGN DO TO HELP?
Global biodiversity is being lost much faster than natural extinction due to changes in land use, unsustainable use of natural resources, invasive alien species, climate change and pollution among others. This is usually brought about through patterns of human activity. Our goal is to raise awareness and stimulate action and funding for broader conservation efforts to reverse the alarming trend of human-caused extinctions that threaten the ecosystems we all share.

eClips: From the Horse’s Mouth

e-clipflashtestFrom EFF website: e-clips is an open-access, searchable database of video clips highlighting experiences and advice from entrepreneurs in a variety of industries, including the fashion industry. Cornell University’s Dr. Deb Streeter developed the original concept: to create a “virtual panel” of experts, to be used to stimulate discussion, illustrate concepts, and create a real-world feel in teaching entrepreneurship.

Check the EFF link for a collection of names to search for fashion related clips. Use the search function on the eClips site to search for clips related to art, design, graphics, business, training, advertising, PR and loads more.

Brock Davis: Creative and Graphic Design

This little interview with American designer Brock Davis brought his clever, humourous work to my attention, and I thought you might like it too …

hand made fonts

sofa-posterHandMadeFont.com creates fonts by taking inspiration from everyday things around them, like leather sofas, biscuits and Lego. They are constantly developing new ideas, and work on commissions for advertising, packaging and print. You can buy ten fonts or the whole collection.

what the font?!

picture-12WhatTheFont is a clever piece of trickery that can read an image file of a text and compare it to other fonts to tell you which one you might be looking at. Clever, eh? And if you’re so clever you fox the machine, you can send your image to the forum and let real live human beings see if they can find it.

Like photoshop but not

phoenixAviary is a web based image editing application that works in a similar way to Photoshop, with powerful tools and layers. And the basic (but powerful) version is free. You can pay for the hotrod version if you want.

It appears to be broken down into 4 sub-programmes, so you produce a colour palette in one, move that into number two and play around with filters, then into number three to edit your image. There’s also a vector graphics section.  If you know your way around Photoshop then you shouldn’t have too much trouble picking it up, but check out the tutorials for a heads-up.
